Marcelo Garcia is one of the greatest BJJ players of all time.
He became widely popular after beating Renzo Gracie and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro at ADCC 2003.
Both Renzo and Shaolin had already established themselves as star players in the sport, and Marcelo was just a brown belt nobody knew about.
I remember downloading a short video clip of Marcelo against Shaolin via a 56k dial-up connection… that’s back when I was a student in Australia.
The match is short. I watched it over and over.
Many of the subscribers of BJJ Reflections are people I know. I suppose about a half of you have been doing BJJ long enough to know who Marcelo Garcia is and have seen his matches and videos.
But the other half of you may not even have a clue about who he is.
So, for those of you who have no idea… here’s the match I’m talking about.
This is, in my opinion, one of the best BJJ/grappling matches ever. And if I’m not mistaken, BJJ folks started using more arm drag after Marcelo Garcia.
2003 sounds like ancient times, but you can find some great inspiration through watching & studying an old match like this one, too.
